In a closer-than-expected outcome, UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss defeated Rishi Sunak to become the new leader of the Conservative Party, succeeding outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson, whose devotion to the previous chancellor of Indian descent appears to have worked against him.
Following more than 170,000 online and postal votes from Conservative members, the 47-year-old senior Cabinet minister ended Sunak's historic run as the first member of Parliament of Indian descent to fight for the top position at 10 Downing Street.

In reference to the primary issue dominating the leadership campaign, which she labelled "one of the longest job interviews in history," she added, "I will deliver on the energy crisis, dealing with people's energy costs but also dealing with the long-term issues we have on energy supply."
Truss thanked her fellow finalist Sunak and paid tribute to departing boss Johnson after that.
